Happy Heart | Storyteller Collection | Rachel Lowe

Hello CVS friends! Today I am sharing a grid type layout using hexagons. I am using the beautiful Storyteller collection.

I have used a hexagon cut file from the Silhouette design store which I cut in white. I used the A5 paper pad to paper piece the hexagons, I love how you have smaller print designs in the paper pad and it saves your 12×12 paper for larger projects. I also fussy cut some elements from the project life cards.

 

I created embellishment clusters on the hexagons using them as a grid. I used foam tape to add many of the embellishments as it adds dimension. Using different embellishment types such as floral ephemera, wood epoxy  buttons and accessory stickers adds texture.

I love using the word and phrase sentiments from the accessory stickers as my journaling. I fussy cut some butterflies and added over my page. I decided to cut my photo as a hexagon also and matted it so it would contrast against the smaller hexagons. I then created a floral cluster over and under my photo.

This photo shows the visual impact using foam tape and different textures on your layout can make, it really does stop it look ‘flat’. Also layering is a key, layering under and over.

Lastly I used the foam title stickers to create my title, the black foam is a wonderful contrast against a white background. A simple layout that was fun to put together!

So Happy | Storyteller Collection | Kylie Kingham.

Hello everyone, it’s Kylie back with you all! Over the past few weeks on the blog the design team has been creating layouts following a sketch. A scrapbooking sketch provides a guide for the placement of photos, a title, journaling and embellishments for your layout. But it doesn’t mean that it’s set in stone. Based on your photos and scrapbook supplies, you may alter the sketch to fit your needs. There are lots of websites that can provide some wonderful sketches, however for my layout today I have created my own sketch for you. Whenever I find a sketch I want to create from, I usually like to print it out and place in a binder folder. That way I can create and recreate using the same sketch as many times as I like.

Sketches don’t necessarily provide measurements, however for my design I did provide the size I trimmed my photo. Sometimes that’s all you need to be able to bring all the other elements together into place. As I mentioned previously creating with a sketch plan doesn’t have to be followed ‘exactly’ – but in this case I did with my own layout. I thought the new ‘Storyteller’ collection would be perfect since I have a strong feature on blooms!

When scrapbooking, I like to co-ordinate the colours in my photo memories with the papers etc that I use. In this case I knew I wanted to include some lovely blue and yellow tones. I chose the reverse side of the SPRING FLING paper. It has a lovely watercolour effect to it in the most perfect shade of blue. From there I followed my sketch and layered several contrasting papers to include the fun LITTLE LOVE paper. For once I did not adhere any of the papers or my photo with foam squares. I kept everything flush except for the floral die cuts. These were layered with foam adhesive squares to really ‘pop’ and stand out from the page.For texture and pure cuteness I also added some of the wooden flairs.

What would a layout be without a big title?? This was secured snuggly next to my photo using the foam title stickers. My photo was trimmed down to a 5″ x 4″ size- mostly because I had a lot of open negative spacing I felt I could trim away. Once completed I also think this sketch would allow journal space too if you like.

Boo To You | Legendary/Boys Rule Collections | Kylie Kingham.

Hi friends! It’s Kylie back with you again with a super fun layout to share. For my family here in Oz we don’t usually recognise Halloween when it swings around, however I have lots of cute photos from when my kids were in Primary School that fit a Halloween theme. Sometimes they had a Halloween disco or dress up and I love documenting these photos. Recently I fell down a rabbit hole (**another), with layered 3D cut files. I really do love trying new things and today I wanted to share a layout I created featuring a Halloween themed wreath which has been designed by Layered Craft on Etsy. I knew I wanted to use mostly an Orange, Black and a hint of Green palette for my page so decided to combine both the ‘Legendary’ and ‘Boys Rule’ collections…..and I love how it turned out!

So let’s chat about these layered cut files. Each layer of the design is different and builds upon the next to create a 3D layered result when completed. The pro’s- You get to create a really unique layout! The downside….(And this didn’t really bother me), You use a fair amount of your paper supply. That being said I included a layer of white cardstock to save my creative papers. Once each layer was cut out it was time for assembly. I have adhered each layer with thin foam adhesive squares. You don’t necessarily have to, but I really wanted a dimensional 3D effect for my page. This style would be perfect for framing! I had five layers for this wreath and I really love seeing each individual colour peeping through.

With my wreath together I needed to prepare the background page. I used some black cardstock as the very base and trimmed the grey ‘ALL STAR’ paper from the LEGENDARY collection down to 11.5″x 11.5″. This was adhered centred over the black cardstock so a nice even border was revealed. I used a black journal pen to draw a freehand border around the edges. Next using double sided tape, I added my wreath centred on the page.

My photo was printed to a 3″x 4″ size twice. A black cardstock photo mat which I trimmed to 3.25″x 4.25″, was added to both before I layered them together over my wreath. I added a few simple embellishments to support my photos as well as some phrase stickers. I felt as though the background was a little bare so using a star punch from my stash, I punched several from the same papers in my wreath and scattered them diagonally across the page. I also added in some of the ‘LEGENDARY’ enamel dots.

Of course I needed a main title and you all know I love them BIG! I used some sparkly gold alpha stickers again from my stash for a little glitter!

All Smiles | Storyteller Collection | Kylie Kingham.

Hello Cocoa Vanilla fans. It’s Kylie again, back to share another project for the month of August. I’m really not sure where this year has gone…We are only a very short time till we hit Spring and the warmer weather again. My inspiration for todays layout was Spring/Summer and everything that goes along with it- Warmer days, lots of blooms and sweet fruits in season! I love the new Storyteller collection with its sweet florals and thought it would be the perfect choice for documenting a favourite memory.

I have several ‘go-to’ layout designs I tend to use time again. One is what I have used today- A great way to use any left over strips you have. I really love lots of layers in my pages and by layering various sized strips such as I have done in different directions builds a nice dimension. I also like to distress the edges for definition.

I really don’t tend to stick to exact measurements for each paper strip. I just work for a nice balance and keep variety. With each strip in place, I cut a photo mat to measure 6.25″x 4.25″ and adhered a 6″x 4″ photo centred over the top. This was then added to my page, just off centre.

I added a lace doily from my craft stash behind my photo and began to layer some of the awesome floral ephemera. I like to curl the petals up a little and use foam squares to add them into place. Again, this gives a lovely sense of dimension. For balance I added a secondary cluster to the opposite corner as the first and tucked in some of the typed phrase stickers from the sticker sheet.

To finish my page I added some Butterflies with foam squares. This made them look as though they were ‘floating’. I also created a title from the FOAM TITLE STICKERS. Overall this is a simple design to bring together but one I always love.

Strawberry Fields | Storyteller Collection | Kylie Kingham.

Howdy friends! It’s Kylie back with you all again for a new month and a new project! My assignment for this week was to ‘tell a story’ within my project. As Scrapbookers, I think we always ‘tell’ or ‘preserve’ a story in the pages we create. But I wanted to share with you all a few extra tips of how to spell out a complete novel on your pages. For todays design I have used the sublime ‘Storyteller’ collection.

To really tell a story on a layout I believe you need more than one photo. A ‘series’ of photos will showcase an event or happy memory you wish to preserve. The first thing you will notice with my page is that I have used a true grid design for my layout. By doing so I was able to add 6 different photos from a fun day at the Strawberry Farm. Now I know it looks like I have a major in Geometry to get everything SO square and neat but the truth is I cheated! I have used a fabulous 16 square grid cut file designed by Gwen at Cut To You.

First I resized my cut file to around 9.5″ x 9.5″ and cut from white cardstock. This was sat aside whilst I prepared my background or ‘border’ pages. I cut a 10″ x 10″ piece of ‘SPRING FLING’ paper and adhered it centred over the ‘DITSY DAISY’ paper. I saved the inside squares from my cut file mat to use as templates for my photos and cardstock to fill each square. It was very simple, I held a template over cardstock and with my scissors I cut a square just slightly larger than the template. These were then added to my grid.

‘But how did you print your photos so small?’ I hear you ask?? I have two methods I use to do this. It can be done by resizing all of the images onto one page using my Silhouette software and then printing on an A4 sheet of photo paper. However for these photos I resized them on an **app called ‘Moldiv’ which then allows me to just print them out on my printer. (**I am in no way affiliated with Moldiv, this is just a recommendation.) Once they were printed I used the exact same method as I did with my cardstock to cut them out.

Another great way to tell a story is to write one! I have added some journal strips which I typed on sticker paper and cut out. They are never the same width and are often crooked but I always love that rustic appearance. It gives a fun sense of ”homemade”. With my photos and cardstock squares in place it was fun to start embellishing. I added a cute title with the ‘FOAM TITLE STICKERS’ and used quite a few of the CHIPBOARD STICKERS which added a nice dimension.

One of the many things I love about Cocoa Vanilla is the very generous FLORAL EPHEMERA packs. Florals are my jam and there are always oodles to play with. I layered several together and combined them with the WOODEN EPOXY FLAIRS also.

Precious Moments | Storyteller Collection | Kylie Kingham.

Hello Cocoa Vanilla fans! It’s Kylie back with you today with another layout to share! My assignment for today was to create a layout using this months mood board as inspiration. In case you haven’t seen the mood board as yet, here is a little sneak peep-

I love that it has a ‘Boho’ vibe and I was instantly drawn to the floral elements and the lace doilies. The new ‘Storyteller’ collection was the perfect colour palette and these were all the elements that I based my layout around today.

(Don’t forget you can create a layout using the mood board as your inspiration and upload it to the monthly album in the Cocoa Vanilla Community FB group for a chance to win a $25 online CVS store voucher!) 

Recently I fell down the rabbit hole of searching for ‘layered flowers’ in the Silhouette Design Store. I found some lovely blooms in my search that I wanted to add to todays layout. I made sure to resize some of them to make them a smaller finished flower and used my A5 paper pack to select each of the 5 layers that feature in each bloom. Once cut, I turned the edges up a little on each layer before adhering them together. I used a foam square to add the centre to each flower. I had a lovely leaf punch in my craft stash that I used to punch some foliage.

The ‘LITTLE LOVE’ paper was selected as my main background to which I added a 10″x 11.5″ piece of white cardstock that I had used a decorative blade to cut the top and bottom edge. Once these two layers were adhered together I added a third, using a 11″x 9″ piece of ‘Oh My Heart’ paper. To finish my background I added two 1/2″x 12″ wide strips of the ‘BRIGHTER DAYS’ paper to the top and bottom. I made sure to cut into the red strip of this paper to really add a colourful punch to my page.

I used a 4″x 6″ sized photo for my layout and backed it with a 4.25″x 6.25″ photo mat cut from one of the A5 papers. Once it was in place I added a paper doily from my craft stash and begun layering my flowers in place. By using different sized flowers helps to create a more balanced result.

For balance and to break the open space of my background, I added a second embellishment cluster to the top right corner of the page. I also used another small paper doily to back everything.

Using the FOAM TITLE STICKERS, I was able to create a large title to suit my page. I placed this to the right side of my photo and finished off my page with some extra ephemera from the die cut packs.

You Are Cute | Storyteller Collection | Kylie Kingham.

Hello friends! It’s Kylie back with you and I am SO excited to share my very first layout created with the new ‘Storyteller’ collection. I’m SO in love with all the prints and florals…So very yummy! Lately I have been trying to incorporate more than one photo to a page so that was the main inspiration for my design today. I decided to use a good old fashioned grid format, showcasing three photos as well as an embellishment square.

I layered several papers together to create the background. First I trimmed 2cm from the top and one side of the CROSS IT OFF paper and adhered it over the DITSY DAISY paper. Next I trimmed 2.5cm off the top and one side of the STORY TIME paper before adhering it as my main background. (**To conserve paper you could remover the centre from the first two layers.)

Using some of the papers from the A5 paper stack I cut a double photo mat. The first sized square was 4.25″x 4.25″ and the second was 4″x 4″. My photos were trimmed down to 3.75″x 3.75″ and adhered centred over the mats in place. These measurements ensured I had a lovely even and neat sized border frame to surround each photo.

The FLORAL EPHEMERA pack is one of my most favourite items and I loved creating a little ‘title’ square to embellish with them. I did turn up the petals a little on each bloom as well as any foliage, before layering them into the square. I used foam squares to stick some in place to create varying height and added dimension. To complete the page I created a title from the FOAM TITLES STICKERS and I couldn’t resist adding some smaller ephemera layered to the photo squares to bring a feeling of balance to the overall page.

Bloom And Grow | Midnight Collection | Kylie Kingham.

Hello friends! Kylie back with you to share a fun project with you all. Today is all about a throwback collection so as soon as I found out my assignment you can be sure I immediately thought of the MIDNIGHT range. I love every single collection of Cocoa Vanilla, but the ‘Midnight’ collection is just that little bit ‘extra’ for me. I love the subtle ‘Boho’ vibe, the delicate florals and pretty colour palette. When I dug through my stash I was super excited to find one last DIE CUT AND BACKING paper. I obviously had put one aside for safe keeping, but this assignment made me think it was time to finally create with it.

These background papers are quite unique and if you haven’t seen or created with one before I highly recommend them. They are great for creating beautiful pages fast! They kind of look as though you have used a cut file design and backed it but really all of that work has been done for you. You are also not limited to using the page as is, you can remove the die cut element and back it with whatever paper you wish or leave it plain. So the creative possibilities are endless.

For my layout today I decided to use the background as it was without breaking it up in any way. Since I didn’t want to cover the background too much, I decided to print my photos a little smaller. I resized them to 2.5″x 4″ using my Silhouette software, and used my home printer for printing. I cut down some of the ALL THE THINGS paper to two- 2.75″x 4.25″ photo mats so that my pictures would have a nice framed border. The photos were layered over each other and adhered to the lower right side portion of the circle template. I was extra super excited to see that I still had some of the adorable mason jar embellishments……I mean seriously…..How cute! Can’t ever get enough of these! I layered lots of florals as well as the mason jars at the base of my photos. To create dimension and texture I curled some of the flower edges upwards and used foam adhesive squares to adhere them in place.

For balance on my page I added a secondary cluster of embellishments on the opposite angle to my photos and following the curve of the circle. By using both the chipboard embellishments and the cardstock embellishments together gave a nice texture to my page. I finished my page design with with a few simple stickers such as the Butterfly and the sub phrase quotes. This was a very quick layout to bring together and I love the finished result.

Totally Awesome | No Limits Collection | Kylie Kingham.

Welcome back to the Cocoa Vanilla blog. It’s Kylie with you and today I am sharing another scrapbooking layout I created with the ‘No Limits’ collection. When I am looking for inspiration to create a layout, more times than often I will use a paper collection as the inspiration. There are lots of stars that feature throughout the ‘NO LIMITS’ range, both in the die cuts, stickers and on the paper prints. I wanted to have an emphasis on stars as well as having dimension and texture within the page design I created and am sharing with you all today.

Using several different papers I cut some layered stars using a simple star shape from my Silhouette software. I resized it and then used the offset feature to produce an even layering effect. There are six layers to each star all together and once they were cut out I distressed all the edges. (**This seemed a great idea at first but it did take me a longggggggg time! But the finished result was worth it.) Once all the layers were adhered together it was time to add them to their canvas! I trimmed down some of the UNIVERSAL paper to measure 9″x 9″, distressed the edges a little and adhered it centred to the Stardust paper. I also drew a fine lined border around the edges with a black marker.

My photo was trimmed down to 5″x 4″ and adhered to some of the ORBIT paper, making sure all the edges were distressed a little for extra texture. With my photo adhered in place I layered a few simple die cuts behind it and adhered the stars positioned in the top portion of my page. For balance I also adhered a star to the base line of my photo and used some of the star puffy stickers too.

To complete my page I created a large title from the title die cut pack and positioned it on my layout so that it would overlap my photo just a little. I used foam adhesive squares to adhere it so that it sat up from the background of my page a little adding a nice dimension.

You’re Awesome | No Limits Collection | Kylie Kingham.

Hello scrappy friends! It’s Kylie with you today and I am SO excited because I am sharing my very first layout created with the new ‘NO LIMITS” collection. I have always been a HUGE fan of all of Zoe’s boy themed collections and this one is of no exception! Love it. I was really inspired by the cute rocket ships in the ephemera pack which reminded me that I had a perfect photo I could scrap with this theme. A fun Rocket cut file by Cut To You was my centrepiece and I wanted to combine lots of colour.

The STARDUST paper was selected as my main background page and since I’m always obsessed with wood grain papers, I chose the BIG BANG paper to create a frame. This was done by cutting it down to 11″x 11″ and removing the centre with my trimming board, leaving a 1″ wide border.It was adhered centred on my page and I then added a 8″x 8″ square of LATITUDE paper.

The A5 paper stack is always my go-to when backing cut files. I prefer to use the smaller sheets rather than cut into my 12″x 12″ papers. Once I had backed my cute rocket, it was adhered to the background with foam adhesive squares.

I cut a 4.25″x 4.25″ photo mat from a piece of paper from the A5 paper stack. My photo was trimmed down to 4″x 4″ before being adhered over the photo mat and onto my layout. I was particularly drawn to the chipboard stickers for this page and added the ‘YOU’RE AWESOME’ sticker title below my photo as well as a few stars for balance. To finish my page I added some sub-quote phrases from the sticker sheet too.
