Hello Michael | You Rock | Missy Whidden

Happy Saturday, friends!  Missy here again, and I’m kicking off a week of Scraplifts here on the blog.  We are all choosing a fellow DT member to scraplift, and I chose a gorgeous layout by Gwen Wruck.  She created a large star, used the You Rock collection, and used a photo of her cat.  I decided to do the same 🙂  I gathered a few papers  and cut a few large stars using my Silhouette Cameo.  I just wanted a stack of crooked stars on the background, so I used the outlines of the stars as well as the centers that were cut out.  I was excited to go with a boy-themed layout since I scrap about little girls all the time 🙂  I added some white gesso in various places and then used some bright blue Shimmerz spray along with some darker grey spray on top of it.  I wanted to pull out that pretty blue color.  I embellished with some Flair Button, Accessory Stickers, Chipboard Stickers, Die Cut Ephemera and some Wood Veneer.

I really love this color scheme.  I wasn’t planning on adding any reds to it, but I decided to fussy cut a few stars from patterned paper, and I love the pop of color it gives.  Here I created a small cluster with  a few stars, a flair button and a “You Rock” die cut piece.  I did do a bit of machine stitching around the blue star with some light grey thread.

I created another cluster over on the left.  I fussy cut the bigger white star from patterned paper also and added the “Rad” circle die cut with some thread under it.  I also fussy cut a few Washi Tape stars out and placed them around the page.

I went simple with my title and used one of the Wood Veneer words.  I used some alpha stickers from the Life is Beautiful collection and added in a sticker and a die cut.  I didn’t do any journaling on this page since it didn’t really need a story.

I love how gesso can lighten things up.  I smudged and blended it pretty thin so it gave it a hazy look.  I love how this allows ink sprays to keep their true colors without seeping into the paper.  I added in a bit of yellow thread under the photo as well as some tissue paper and adhesive foam for dimension.

I love the Rubber Charms!  I used one here right on top of the photo.  I used another Flair Button here with more thread under it.  I used a few pieces from the cut apart patterned paper as layers behind the photo.

I love how the background turned out and how you can see it peeking out from behind the photo.  I layered in another fussy cut star with a sticker as well as a Washi Tape star and a Chipboard star.

I hope this inspires you!  I had lots of fun scraplifting Gwen.  It gave me ideas I wouldn’t normally have tried, and I love that!  I have a process video here if you’d like to see how I created this.

Thanks so much for stopping in!  Have a great weekend!

About the Author:

Missy hails from Central Florida in the United States, where she has lived her entire life. She has been married to husband Marshall for over 16 years, although they have been together for 22. They have two sweet little girls, Reese (10) and Paige (7). Both girls are autistic and nonverbal so life is never boring. Missy says "they have taught us so much and they are very happy children. They are the light of our lives and they make us laugh constantly". When Missy is not scrapping, she's a fitness instructor. She teaches six classes a week. Before having children, she taught high school English. She says she has always been interested in art and playing with paper and stickers, and began scrapbooking just before Reese was born in 2006. She was hooked instantly! Missy's style has changed quite a bit. Back when she started she used paper, stickers, and deco scissors. Over the years she discovered die cutting tools and mixed media products. Currently she loves to use watercolours, her Cameo, and her sewing machine on most of her projects; and she usually scraps photos of her children or family. She describes scrapbooking as her calming therapy that helps her to relax. "I try and do something scrappy related every day, and I just love it dearly." When she isn't creating, Missy also loves reading and catching up on her favourite TV shows.
