About Sue Plumb

Sue is a stay at home mum of 3 (daughter Brielle, 8 and twin sons Hunter and Kaden, 3) and lives in the beautiful Glasshouse Mountains in Queensland. Sue has been scrapping for approximately 8 years, having started shortly after her daughter was born. After the premature birth of her sons, she took 18 months off scrapping to concentrate on family and since her return says she is enjoying it more than ever. (Her biggest issue now is finding quiet time!) She currently designs for challenge blogs, and has had work published in scrapbooking magazines on numerous occasions, including the cover. Although primarily a 12×12 scrapper, she says she loves to dabble a bit with pocket style scrapping, art journaling, and the odd canvas and card too. She best describes her style as "versatile" - ranging from clean and linear one day, to messy mixed media the next.

Hi everyone! Sue Plumb here to share my latest design team project with you. Today I have a layout I created using the ‘You Rock’ collection; a bit of mixed media; and a funny photo of one of my boys that I took recently at a theme park.

I started my page with a sheet of the ‘In Line’ paper, and I chose to run the stripes vertically to mimic the bars in the photo. I then added some extra depth to my background using a texture stamp and some grey watercolour paint. I also added some small pieces of torn striped washi tape sticker; along with a printed phrase washi sticker to the top corner of my page.

Next, I gathered together some papers to create a layered mat for my photo. The papers I used included the reverse side of the ‘In Line’ paper; ‘Night Sky’; and ‘Random’. I also use the lightning bolt strip cut from the ‘Stripped’ paper and ran it vertically through the focal area of my page. I then added some messy black cotton thread for texture and mounted my photo on top.

To embellish my page, I started by adding a few fussy cut stars from the ‘Starshine’ paper; then a couple of chipboard accent stickers, which I layered directly onto my photo.

Next, I added several wood veneer shapes around my page; including the hello word that I used as part of my title. The remainder of my title was created using some Colour Me Happy black alphabet stickers and Totally Rad wood grain alphabet stickers. I also added a few small phrase stickers from the accessory sticker sheet.

Beneath my photo I added the awesome tag rubber charm, which I tied with a small piece of twine. To finish off my layout I added some splatters of mist and a few stamped phrases and date.

Thanks for stopping by today so I could share this with you. I will be back again in a couple of weeks with another project. Until then, happy scrapping!

My Heart is Full | Love Always | Sue Plumb

By | 2017-07-07T00:47:14+00:00 July 7th, 2017|Design Team, Inspiration, Love Always|

Hi everyone! Sue here with you today to continue with this week’s focus on “the story”, and using journaling on your layouts to make sure you tell the story behind the photos you scrap.

The page I have to share with you today features the beautiful ‘Love Always’ collection, and a candid photo of my children that I took a few years ago. It was taken back when my boys were still babies; when my daughter used to give them a nightly bottle while I prepared dinner for the rest of the family. We had a deal with her that she could watch whatever she wanted on TV while she did it.

I started with the soft pink side of the ‘Class Act’ paper as my base, and added some mixed media to it before I went any further. I first added some stamping using a random text stamp (perfect for a story theme, don’t you think?) to the top right corner and bottom left corner. I then added some pink watercolour paint over the top, to further define the focal areas of my page. Next, I added some smears of coloured texture paste, and some splatters of mist; then set it aside to dry.

The next step was to create the layered mat for my photo to sit on. I used a variety of papers (‘Note to Self’; ‘Class Act’ and ‘Lovely Things’), which I layered together with some messy cotton thread before mounting my photo on top. I also used some of the same papers in my cluster at the top of the page, along with pieces from the die cut ephemera pack.

Above my photo, I added the word together that was cut from the ‘Lovely Things’ cut apart paper; as well as a small arrow from the puffy sticker sheet. Alongside my photo, I added another piece from the cut apart, as well as an arrow from the chipboard accent sticker sheet.

I then added the two die cut butterflies from the ephemera pack just below my top cluster; and dotted some of the Sparkles enamel dots around my page.

To finish off, I added my typed journaling; as well as the small my heart is full banner from the ephemera pack as my title.

I am so glad this theme prompted me to get this memory documented before the details became a distant memory. Do you have any photos laying around that need their stories told too? I hope this week is inspiring you to get them out and document them.

Thanks for stopping by today. Until next time, happy scrapping!

Hello Winter | Wild at Heart | Sue Plumb

By | 2017-06-29T01:27:19+00:00 June 29th, 2017|Design Team, Inspiration, Wild at Heart|

Hi everyone! It’s Sue here with you today to share my latest project with you. Last week the design team were sharing their season inspired layouts, so today I have my own winter themed layout to share using the ‘Wild at Heart’ collection.

Winter where I live isn’t very “wintery” compared with many other locations where the temperatures truly plummet; but when our temperatures do begin to drop here I am always excited at the prospect of pulling out my jackets, scarves and boots (even when our daytime temperatures are still hovering around the 20 degree Celsius mark!)

To help give my page a winter feel, I decided to keep largely with shades of blue, white and grey (with a couple of tiny pops of pink to lift it). I mainly used the ‘Wild at Heart’ collection for my layout (with a couple of ‘You Rock’ papers thrown in). For my background I chose the fabulous wood grain pattern side of the Artisan paper; which I topped with 3 circles cut from the specialty vellum sheet. To give my background some extra depth and to tie in with the colour of my jacket in the photo, I then added some vibrant blue watercolour paint around some of the circles and in the space between them.

Next, I created a layered mat for my photo to sit on; which consisted of pieces cut from several ‘Wild at Heart’ papers (Mariposa; Patchwork; Double Dot and Memento); and two ‘You Rock’ papers (Galactic and Random). I also added a paper doily and some frayed gauze to my layers to help soften them, and provide some subtle texture.

To add further depth to my layers, I tucked in a frame from the die cut ephemera pack, which I cut in half and placed under either side of my photo. Below the photo I added a small banner (also from the ephemera pack); and to help draw the viewer’s eye in, I added an arrow from the chipboard accent stickers alongside it.

Also from the chipboard sticker sheet, was the word hello I used for part of my title; then I completed it by using the stitched denim ‘Hello Sunshine’ alphabet stickers to spell out winter. As butterflies are such a gorgeous feature of the ‘Wild at Heart’ collection, I couldn’t resist adding some. (Who can say no to butterflies, right?) I added one chipboard butterfly, as well as two fussy cut butterflies (which were cut from the Mariposa paper).

I finished off my layout with my handwritten journaling; a few stamped phrases; and some mist splatters.

Thanks for stopping by today so I could share this with you. I will be back again soon with another project to share. Until then, happy scrapping!

You Rock | You Rock | Sue Plumb

By | 2017-06-05T12:53:39+00:00 June 7th, 2017|Design Team, Inspiration, You ROCK|

Hi everyone! It’s Sue Plumb here with you today to share my latest layout using the awesome new ‘You Rock’ collection. As a mum of twin boys (and partner of one overgrown boy), I am seriously loving this range to scrap photos of them all. For this page, I used a photo I took recently of the three of them together on one of our mountain hikes. (And I also managed to include some of everything from the collection!)

As you can see, I went with a mixed media background for this page. To create it, I started with white cardstock and then added watercolour paints (both by brushing and splattering) and also stamping, to define the focal areas of my page. I also added some small torn pieces of the washi tape stickers to help add depth to my layers. (When creating busy backgrounds like this, it is important to ensure you keep some areas clear to allow the eye a place to rest.)

Next, it was time for the paper! I used a variety of different shaped and sized pieces from the Night Sky; Galactic; Random; Stripped and In Line papers to create a layered mat for my photo to sit on. I also added some stars that I fussy cut from the Starshine paper and a frame from the die cut ephemera pack, which I attached using tiny staples. (Staples are a great touch to add to a masculine page.) I also added some messy cotton thread for texture.

I also used staples to attach a rubber charm to the corner of my photo (the charms are very soft, so they staple easily.) I then added the epic rubber charm alongside my photo to help draw the eye in, and on the opposite side I added a wood veneer arrow.

To help balance my layout, I created an embellishment cluster in the top right corner where I had already added a small amount of paint and stamping. The cluster consisted of a label from the Random paper; fussy cut star from the Starshine paper; the boys rule flair button and some cotton thread. I also added a chipboard accent sticker star; a wood veneer lightning bolt and the dirt quote washi tape sticker nearby.

I then created a smaller, similar cluster to help anchor my wood veneer title to the page using another fussy cut star; ephemera arrow; and small chipboard sticker star. I decided to leave all my wood veneer pieces raw, as the beautiful natural colour and texture of them suited the theme of my page perfectly.

To finish off my layout I added the small yellow rad sticker and some phrases from the accessory sticker sheet; then some of the yellow cross enamel shapes scattered around my page. Finally, I added a line of handwritten journaling; and some stamped phrases and date, and I was done! I am so happy with how this page turned out and I had so much fun creating it.

Don’t forget that Cocoa Vanilla will be at the Brisbane Scrapbook and Papercraft Expo this weekend (June 9-11). The ‘You Rock’ collection (and all your other favourite goodies) will be available to purchase on our stand, or you can book into one of our daily classes with Zoe Pearn or Gwen Wruck. (Visit the blog post HERE for all the details.) I will be working on the stand each day, so make sure you come and say hello!

Until next time, happy scrapping!

Make a Wish | Make a Wish | Zoe Pearn

By | 2017-05-25T16:43:26+00:00 May 30th, 2017|Design Team, Inspiration, Make A Wish|

Hi everyone! It’s Sue Plumb here with you, and today I thought it would be nice to pop in and share another inspirational layout on behalf of Zoe, this time using the bright and beautiful Make a Wish collection.

As you can see, Zoe used a fabulous grid design for this layout; which allowed her to showcase a large variety of papers and embellishments from the collection all on the one page. This sort of design is also ideal to include multiple photographs, without the photos appearing too cluttered.

You can see how Zoe has treated each square of her grid as an individual focal point, by adding a stitched border to highlight it. Leaving a small space between the blocks also allows each area to shine independently, as well as working harmoniously within the overall design.

When each square is examined, you can see the finer details, and how Zoe has carefully chosen her embellishments to create small, delicate clusters. Die cut ephemera, chipboard stickers, vellum accents, Sparkles enamel dots and wood veneer all blend seamlessly together to create a page that is full of interest, yet pleasing to the eye.

The use of black and white photos also ensures that the subject (Zoe’s gorgeous daughter) remains the focus; and ensures that no background elements or colours are present to clash with anything on the page.

If you have ever wondered about ways to incorporate a wide variety of elements or photos onto your page, then I would highly recommend a grid design as Zoe has used here. It’s a great way to start a page and will then allow you to be as creative as you wish!

If you would like the chance to come and learn from Zoe in person, she will be teaching classes at the Brisbane Scrapbook and Papercraft Expo from June 9-11. Zoe will teach two classes each day using our recent Wild at Heart and Love Always collections. You can visit our Facebook event page for more details of the classes and expo HERE

Until next time, happy scrapping!

Cocoa Vanilla at the Brisbane Scrapbook & Papercraft Expo!

By | 2017-05-25T15:55:18+00:00 May 29th, 2017|Chit Chat, Love Always, Make A Wish, Wild at Heart|

Hi everyone!

This year’s Brisbane Scrapbook and Papercraft Expo is fast approaching, and we are getting excited at the opportunity to see so many of our lovely friends and fans there!

The expo is being held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, located at South Bank, daily from June 9-11.

Cocoa Vanilla will have a retail stand at the expo where you will be able to come see (and buy!) all your favourite products – including all our most recent collections, page and card kits, and even some show exclusives!

We will also be hosting daily classes taught by Cocoa Vanilla owner and designer herself, Zoe Pearn; and design team member (and current Scrapbooking Memories Magazine master) Gwen Wruck. Both Zoe and Gwen are accomplished scrapbookers, as well as experienced teachers; and their classes promise to be jam packed with product and full of fun.

For Zoe’s first class, (daily from 9.30-11.30am); participants will create two gorgeous layouts using the hugely popular Wild at Heart collection. Zoe will also pass on her tips for getting the most out of your supplies and leave you inspired to continue to create when you get home. Class materials include papers, stickers, ephemera, wood veneer and more.

In Gwen’s 12.00-2.00pm class, participants will create two bright & beautiful layouts using the stunning Make a Wish collection and learn her tips for creating embellishment clusters in her signature layered style. (Those who are brave enough can even add some hand stitching to their pages.) Materials for this class include papers, stickers, ephemera and enamel shapes.

Zoe’s final class each day (2.30-4.30pm) is a traveler’s notebook style mini album, featuring the beautiful Love Always collection. Participants in this class will learn how easy it can be to create a treasured keepsake, and can either follow the directions, or go their own way to customise their album to their own needs. This feminine collection makes a pretty album that can suit a variety of themes (weddings, love, girls, family or even yourself!) Class materials include papers, stickers, die cut ephemera, traveler’s notebook and more.

All class kits include materials required to complete the projects, plus plenty of left-overs to use when you get home!

As an added bonus, every seat booked in each of our classes, will earn an entry into the draw to win a Cocoa Vanilla Studio shopping spree – with a $100 voucher to the online store up for grabs for one random participant.

Bookings for classes with Zoe or Gwen can be made via the Scrapbook Expo website. Simply click on the class you are interested in on the timetable and follow the prompts through to book: http://scrapbookexpo.com.au/scrapbook/2017-time-table/
