About Sue Plumb

Sue is a stay at home mum of 3 (daughter Brielle, 8 and twin sons Hunter and Kaden, 3) and lives in the beautiful Glasshouse Mountains in Queensland. Sue has been scrapping for approximately 8 years, having started shortly after her daughter was born. After the premature birth of her sons, she took 18 months off scrapping to concentrate on family and since her return says she is enjoying it more than ever. (Her biggest issue now is finding quiet time!) She currently designs for challenge blogs, and has had work published in scrapbooking magazines on numerous occasions, including the cover. Although primarily a 12×12 scrapper, she says she loves to dabble a bit with pocket style scrapping, art journaling, and the odd canvas and card too. She best describes her style as "versatile" - ranging from clean and linear one day, to messy mixed media the next.

Cocoa Vanilla at the Brisbane Scrapbook & Papercraft Expo!

By | 2017-05-25T15:55:18+00:00 May 29th, 2017|Chit Chat, Love Always, Make A Wish, Wild at Heart|

Hi everyone!

This year’s Brisbane Scrapbook and Papercraft Expo is fast approaching, and we are getting excited at the opportunity to see so many of our lovely friends and fans there!

The expo is being held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, located at South Bank, daily from June 9-11.

Cocoa Vanilla will have a retail stand at the expo where you will be able to come see (and buy!) all your favourite products – including all our most recent collections, page and card kits, and even some show exclusives!

We will also be hosting daily classes taught by Cocoa Vanilla owner and designer herself, Zoe Pearn; and design team member (and current Scrapbooking Memories Magazine master) Gwen Wruck. Both Zoe and Gwen are accomplished scrapbookers, as well as experienced teachers; and their classes promise to be jam packed with product and full of fun.

For Zoe’s first class, (daily from 9.30-11.30am); participants will create two gorgeous layouts using the hugely popular Wild at Heart collection. Zoe will also pass on her tips for getting the most out of your supplies and leave you inspired to continue to create when you get home. Class materials include papers, stickers, ephemera, wood veneer and more.

In Gwen’s 12.00-2.00pm class, participants will create two bright & beautiful layouts using the stunning Make a Wish collection and learn her tips for creating embellishment clusters in her signature layered style. (Those who are brave enough can even add some hand stitching to their pages.) Materials for this class include papers, stickers, ephemera and enamel shapes.

Zoe’s final class each day (2.30-4.30pm) is a traveler’s notebook style mini album, featuring the beautiful Love Always collection. Participants in this class will learn how easy it can be to create a treasured keepsake, and can either follow the directions, or go their own way to customise their album to their own needs. This feminine collection makes a pretty album that can suit a variety of themes (weddings, love, girls, family or even yourself!) Class materials include papers, stickers, die cut ephemera, traveler’s notebook and more.

All class kits include materials required to complete the projects, plus plenty of left-overs to use when you get home!

As an added bonus, every seat booked in each of our classes, will earn an entry into the draw to win a Cocoa Vanilla Studio shopping spree – with a $100 voucher to the online store up for grabs for one random participant.

Bookings for classes with Zoe or Gwen can be made via the Scrapbook Expo website. Simply click on the class you are interested in on the timetable and follow the prompts through to book: http://scrapbookexpo.com.au/scrapbook/2017-time-table/

Entry tickets to the expo can also be pre-purchased online via the Scrapbook and Papercraft Expo website.

We hope to see you at the expo!

100% Boy | You Rock | Sue Plumb

By | 2017-05-18T12:17:23+00:00 May 21st, 2017|Design Team, Inspiration, You ROCK|

Hi everyone! Sue Plumb here to share my latest design team project with you all. This week we have been celebrating the boys on our blog, with the design team sharing masculine themed projects to inspire you. So today it’s my turn, and I have a layout featuring the new ‘You Rock’ collection and a mixed media background. I love creating boy layouts, (which is probably fortunate seeing as I have two of them), and they seem to go hand in hand with my frequent need to get messy.

For my background I started with the B-side of the Night Sky paper, which I brushed with some red watercolour paint, then I added some stamping using black ink to provide some extra depth.

Next, I started creating some layers behind my photos. I used pieces from several different papers – Night Sky; Starshine; Stripped; and Random. I also added some frayed gauze to provide some texture.

Tucked in amongst my layers, I also added pieces from the die cut ephemera pack, and I also added the “you rock” one directly to my photo, along with a flair button, which I nested on some messy cotton thread.

To reinforce the humorous theme of my page, I used a number of small word stickers from the accessory sticker sheet around my page. I also added some wood veneer pieces, which I coloured black (using a Sharpie pen) to help make them pop.

To tie in the black on my page even further, I also added some small pieces of torn black washi from the new washi stickers pack. (I am so excited these have been added as an embellishment – there is such a good range of patterns in the pack and they tear perfectly!)

To finish off, I added a starburst chipboard sticker; stamped the date and a few phrases; and then a splattering of black mist.

For those who have been waiting, the ‘You Rock’ collection will be released to the Cocoa Vanilla Studio online store on Friday 26th May.

Thanks for stopping by today so I could share this with you. I will be back again in a couple of weeks with another project. Until then, happy scrapping! X

Wild @ Heart | Wild at Heart | Sue Plumb

By | 2017-05-05T11:48:31+00:00 May 7th, 2017|Design Team, Inspiration, Wild at Heart|

Hi everyone! It’s Sue here today to share my latest creation using the Wild at Heart collection with you. For this layout, I chose to document a recent photo of my hubby mountain climbing. I must admit, seeing photos of him like this fill me with a mix of happiness, pride and fear. First, I am happy that he is doing what he loves. Second, I am proud that he is out there pursuing his hobby and getting better at it with every climb. But I can’t help the fear – mainly because he is a “free climber” and doesn’t use ropes.

I started this page with the gorgeous Artisan paper as my background. (I so love the beautiful watercolour effect and quirky hand drawn accents on this paper!) I then created a mat for my photo using a piece of the Memento paper. I trimmed it to make sure the phrase “aim for the stars” was showing just above the photo.

To help make my photo pop, I mounted it up on some cardboard and then added two woodgrain photo corners from the die cut ephemera pack. I then added the I just can’t get enough (you don’t know how true this is of him!) phrase sticker from the accessory sticker sheet.

To help frame my photo, I created clusters at two of the diagonally opposite corners using layered pieces of ephemera, messy cotton thread and a few Sparkles enamel dots. I used foam mounting tape to lift a few pieces and help give some dimension. I also added a fussy cut butterfly from the Mariposa paper nearby.

Given the “nature” theme of this photo, I wanted to include some wood veneer pieces for natural texture, and I couldn’t go past using the collection name from the wood veneer words pack as my title. The cute little cloud I used was from the Endless Summer collection.

To finish off my page I added a small cluster in the bottom left corner of my page using a label, sticker, wood veneer heart and anther fussy cut butterfly. I then added some small phrase stickers from the sticker sheet around my page and I was done.

Thanks for stopping by today so I could share this with you. I will be back again later in the month with another project to share. Until then, happy scrapping!

Happy | Love Always | Zoe Pearn

By | 2017-05-01T22:37:14+00:00 May 2nd, 2017|Design Team, Inspiration, Love Always|

Hi everyone! It’s Sue here today popping in to share something different with you. Don’t get me wrong, it’s still a scrapbooking layout. It’s different, as in, not MY scrapbooking.

You all know that Zoe is the owner and designer behind Cocoa Vanilla Studio. And you already know she designs amazing products that we all love to use. But one of the things you don’t get to see often enough, are the stunning scrapbook pages that she creates. So today I thought I would sneak in and share one with you on her behalf.

This is one of my favourite EVER pages of Zoe’s, which she created using the beautiful ‘Love Always’ collection

I absolutely adore the amazing level of detail Zoe achieved on this layout. From the subtle machine stitching, to the paper layering and perfectly placed embellishments, and even a tiny bit of splatter!

Let’s take a closer look at the details…

Zoe used a variety of embellishments to frame around her photo and journaling. Layers of die cut ephemera pieces are topped with delicate bitty blooms and chipboard accent stickers to add extra dimension.

Tucked in amongst those delicious papery layers, you can see wood veneer pieces that bring an element of natural texture and warmth; along with unique details such as resin flowers from the Bits & Pieces pack.

The use of the vellum butterflies alongside the photo (from the vellum accents pack), adds an extra softness and romanticism to this loved-up layout.

One of the elements of this page I am most drawn to, is the use of the two tassels (also from the Bits & Pieces pack). The  way they are bound together in unity is quite symbolic on this layout that is about celebrating the unity of two people.

Thanks for stopping in today so I could share Zoe’s gorgeous page with you. (I think I will definitely have to do this more often – layouts like this deserve to be seen close up!)

Until next time, happy scrapping!

You’re Awesome | You Rock | Sue Plumb

By | 2017-04-20T20:47:49+00:00 April 21st, 2017|Design Team, Inspiration, You ROCK|

Hi everyone! It’s Sue here with you today sharing my layout for this week’s themed ‘Scraplift Week’. It also happens to be my very first layout using the brand new “You ROCK” boy themed collection. (This range starts shipping to retailers on Monday 24th April, so keep an eye out – it will be hitting store shelves very soon!)

For my scraplift, I decided to look back through the Cocoa Vanilla archives for some masculine themed inspiration from previous collections and this is what I created…

I have always admired the clean, fresh style of Raquel Bowman; as it’s quite different from my own usual style. (My layouts typically use a full patterned paper background, and tend to be a bit more freestyle and messy than the restrained precision that Raquel is known for.)

Here is Raquel’s layout that provided me the inspiration – it was from quite some time ago using the Made of Awesome collection and I have always loved this page…

I decided to take her original design and flip it over, as I found it worked better with the portrait orientation photo I wanted to use. I did stick with the main structural elements though, including using only a half patterned paper background and using a diagonal flow of embellishments to draw the eye through the photo.

I used a piece of the In Line grey striped paper on my background, which I complimented with a thin strip of the B-side of the Stripped paper. I love grey, so wanted to mainly focus on the achromatic pieces from the collection. I also cut some of the circles from the pattern on the Stripped paper, which I used to layer under the edges of my photo, along with a paper doily.

For my embellishments, I started by pulling out all the black / white / grey ones, and then sorted through them to choose which ones I was going to use. I chose various pieces of die cut ephemera; chipboard stickers; a flair button and a rubber charm, which I used as my title on the photo. I also added a few pops of yellow, using some stars I fussy cut from the Starshine paper and some enamel dots. (I used foam mounting tape under some of my elements to provide extra dimension.)

I strayed a little from the clean style to add some messy thread, a few randomly stamped phrases and black splatters – all of which made my messy side much happier! (I do love that fact that I was able to add enough of my own touches to make the layout mine, whilst still maintaining the integrity of Raquel’s original design.)

If you are ever stuck for an idea and don’t know where to start, scraplifting another layout can be a great source of inspiration. (You can find all the CVS design team layouts pinned on the Pinterest account HERE)

Thanks for stopping by today so I could share this with you. Until next time, happy scrapping!

This Makes Me Happy | Wild at Heart + Endless Summer | Sue Plumb

By | 2017-03-28T16:45:29+00:00 April 7th, 2017|Design Team, Endless Summer, Inspiration, Wild at Heart|

Hi everyone! It’s Sue Plumb here, popping in today with another design team project to share with you. For this layout, I decided to combine the two most recent Cocoa Vanilla collections – Wild at Heart and Endless Summer. (Who would have thought that these two collections would mix so well together?) My page features a photo I took of my children when I took them to see “The Secret Life of Pets” movie.

I wanted to keep this layout design relatively simple, to allow the soft colours of the papers and embellishments to shine, so I opted for a white cardstock background. I then created a mat for my photo using multiple layers of different patterned papers from the two collections, and a paper doily from my stash.

To add some extra dimension to my layers, I also added some chipboard frames from the Wild at Heart collection. I LOVE these frames – they are so versatile with the variety of patterns and sizes in each pack. You can see how I also added some messy cotton thread to my layers to add some subtle texture.

I used a combination of embellishments dotted around my page. This included die cut ephemera from both collections and some super cute rubber charms from Wild at Heart (these are a brand new addition to the Cocoa Vanilla range).

To help balance my design, I created a small cluster in the top right hand corner of my page. I repeated many of the same elements from my main focal area – layered patterned papers, a chipboard frame, die cut ephemera, a small phrase sticker and some cotton thread. I also added a flair button inside the chipboard frame.

Instead of using a large title for this page, I opted to use the small this makes me happy die cut tucked in above my photo for my title, alongside a cheeky little die cut flamingo. (Given the subject, I had to squeeze a sneaky little animal on there somewhere!)

To finish my page I added a few small triangles of patterned paper to break up the white space; my journaling; some stamping; and a few navy mist splatters.

Thanks for stopping by today so I could share this with you. I hope I have inspired you to look at your stash and perhaps try combining some different collections too?

Until next time, happy scrapping!
