Hi Creative friends,

Gwen with you today on the blog.  They say every rule has an exception so when the design team were asked the question Pink or Blue? I think everyone would have thought I would say pink… and normally I would, absolutely because, well… PINK!  However, being so close to the silly season, I really really wanted to scrap these two pics of my little Miss and I thought Blue would be the perfect choice for that, so Blue it was!

The design of this page began with the idea of creating a Christmas tree.  As I was working with the new Bohemian Dream collection which is not a Christmas line as such,  I knew I’d have to add some kind of Christmas element to bring it together.  To do this, I simply cut the word “Christmas” out on my Silhouette.  I placed the title towards the bottom of my page and centered it as I wanted it to represent the lowest branches of my Christmas tree design.  I have backed the cut file with a combination of the Abundant, Gypsy Heart, and Flower Child papers.

To finish out my title, I used the Chipboard Title Stickers word “beautiful”.  I just have to say too, the adhesive on these is so good, no need to add extra glue, it’s super strong – and we all love that!  Just decorate with mist, paint etc and stick them on, I just love how customisable these are.

Now that the title was sorted, I worked on placing my photos.  I knew they would be the 2nd largest element I would have besides the large title and needed them locked into position before I could add my mixed media and the rest of my design.  Before sticking them down, I added some watercolor splatters in a pretty shade of blue.  It softens the edges of the photo and adds to the otherwise fairly blank background.  I’ve double mounted the photos using the Abundant, and Gypsy Heart papers and stitched around the edges with my machine.

To create the top of my tree, I’ve added two of the leave die cuts from the Ephemera Pack.  I also centered a sentiment sticker from the Accessory Sticker sheet over the top to hide where the leaves meet.  I’ve also added the “Oh So Happy” circle die cut from that same pack and the pretty butterfly in substitute for an angel.

Here you can see the pretty result from using shimmery watercolors on the white chipboard title stickers and the flair badge I’ve added to my tile.  I’ve also placed more of the leaves, this time those from the Vellum accents pack under this cluster to add to the feel of the Christmas tree.

To finish off my layout, I stamped 4 hearts with grey ink onto the Gypsy Heart paper using the Clear Stamps set and fussy cut them out, I placed 3 of these at the bottom of my page for the tree base, and one at the very top to represent the very top of the tree.

Thanks for popping by today, I hope the mention of Christmas didn’t make you groan, I know it’s a little early, but if I don’t create in the season it’s oh so much harder to get it done during the year.

Until next time

Hi Creative friends!

Gwen with you on the blog today with another project using the DIVINE new Bohemian Dream collection.  I cannot tell you how much I love using this collection, the colours are just so fresh and beautiful!  It is fast becoming my favourite collection yet!

The design for this page began with my photos, I had a sweet little series of shots I wanted to use and I knew that the purple-blue dress up would be the perfect match for this collection.  I decided to print them quite small with the idea that I could then have them running across my page.  I wanted the colours in the photos to really pop so went with a white background.  Rather than using white cardstock, I went with the divine Kaleidoscope paper with the wood grain running width ways to draw the eye along the row of photos.

Once I had a plan for my photos I began work on my photo mat.  I am a huge fan of the Beautiful Mess pattern paper with the variety of rectangles in different prints.  I’ve used several of these for the page, including the green triangle design in my paper layers and the pink and purple designs to matt my photos.  I have used the large ombre purple piece as the main part of my paper layers.  All I have done is cut them all up and then shuffle the layers until I was happy.   A few staples in the centre secures them in place.  The green triangle design was too small so I simply cut it in half and attached to each side, to give the appearance of a larger piece.

To soften the layers, I added a doily from my stash, always the perfect little touch, and then went about locking in the position of my photos.  Next, it was time to embellish.  I went through the Die cut Ephemera Pack and pulled the elements I thought would go by colour.  I love the watercolour feel to the rectangle die cut and whilst “Shine Bright” is a fun sentiment, I felt “you are amazing” was a better fit for my page so I just mounted that with foam and added directly on top.  I love how you can still see the pretty water-colour underneath.

Next, it was time to think about the title of the page, I didn’t have anything specific in mind, these were just sweet little pictures of my miss on a regular day.  I decided that I loved the colours in the “dream” and “BIG” words on the Chipboard Accent Stickers and they went so well with that ombre paper I used for my paper layers so they were the perfect fit. I love the cute little hearts too in this sheet so couldn’t help but add those too.

I’ve also added the sweet little bird Flair button, elements from the Die cut Ephemera Pack including a die cut butterfly, the tabs used on the far left photo and the shine bright banner,  Accessory Stickers, and the Enamel Shapes – how cute are those hearts!!

To finish the page off, I have added some stitching either side of the row of photos and around the edge of the layout in a contrasting thread.

Thanks for popping by today, I hope I’ve inspired you to get into your craft space and create!  Oh and be sure to add your layouts to the Cocoa Vanilla Studio Facebook group, we love featuring pages you create!

Until next time

Hi Creative friends!

Gwen back with you on the blog today with another project using the DIVINE new Bohemian Dream collection.  I’m sticking with my theme this month of documenting the first 10 years of my daughter’s life, this time creating a page for her album.

I had already spent a long time sorting photos and getting them into a consistent format for my mini tag album so I thought why not use that effort and also create a 12 x 12 layout.  I knew the layout would be a bit of a challenge because I had eleven photos I wanted to add and I knew they were all in different formats, but I’m super glad I gave it a whirl and love the end result.  The best way I find to include lots of photos on a page is to print them small.  I began by creating a Photo collage using this feature at my local print shop, there are lots of formats to choose from so I went about creating a couple.  I mixed and matched the photos on each so that I would have a few choices of the sizes each of the photos would be printed in.

I then went about working on the position of the photos, I just shuffled them until I was happy.  For my background, I’ve used the “Wild and Free” paper.  I was also restricted by the fact that I wanted to keep them in timeline order, so their order and position really did dictate the design of the page.  Once I had them looking good I went about matting each one twice.  I used a combination of papers from the 6×6 paper pad.  I love using the paper pads for small photo mounts like this, as the designs are printed smaller than the 12×12 so you see more of them.  Proportionally the designs are a better fit with the photos.

At this point, all of my photos were locked into position, it was now time to add the title.  I really love the colours in the chipboard word “HAPPY” from the Chipboard Stickers sheet so I teamed that with the words from the Chipboard Titles sheet to make my title “This Happy Life”.  Of course, you can leave these plain, but I really wanted the pop of colour so I’ve added some shimmery watercolors from my stash, just using a paintbrush.  These Chipboard pieces are so versatile, you could add mists and inks or embossing powders etc, so many ways to make them uniquely fit your layout.  I was going for a ‘not so perfect’ look here, I didn’t want to cover the entire piece of chipboard, I wanted variation in the colouring.

Next, I just could not help but use some of the vellum accents, the florals in this pack are my favorite!!  I positioned one of the larger vellum pieces over a similar style die cut from the Die Cut Ephemera pack for a layered flower effect.  I placed two others around my page, simply securing with a small amount of liquid glue in the center.

I also added leaves from the Die Cut Ephemera pack to my main floral element under the title and some vellum butterflies… oh so pretty!  I also added foam to one of the sentiments in this pack and added that.  I really just kept the design simple so it wasn’t competing with all those photos!

Lastly, I’ve added a couple of words from the Accessory Stickers sheet and some Enamel Shapes and that was the layout finished.  How cute are those hearts? Aren’t they the perfect finishing touch.  Thanks for popping by today and keep sharing those beautiful creations of yours on the Cocoa Vanilla Studios Facebook group, we love seeing them!

Until next time,

Hi Creative friends!

Gwen here with you today with a very special share… Special for a couple of reasons, firstly, it is my very first project using the DIVINE new Bohemian Dream collection we have all been swooning over, and more importantly, it’s special because it’s a project 10 years in the making!

I am a huge fan of tag mini albums and I have always wanted to do one featuring my little Miss and all of her birthday celebrations.  I wanted to create one project that would show just how much she has grown up over the years and of course, birthday photos are a great way to see that!  It took a little bit of work to sort through 10 years of photos but so worth it!  As you can imagine, there was quite a bit of inconsistency in the photos due to them being taken over such a long period of time over many different cameras. I thought the best way to work with that would be to print them all in black and white and edit with the same filter.  I’m really happy with the consistent feel they now have.

I then went about putting the photos in order from birth to 10, this gave me a really good starting point for the design of the album and dictated the layout for all of the pages.  Some of the photos were not that great quality wise so they had to be printed smaller, others were the square format and some were 6×4.  I really love the mix of sizes and I think it really adds an eclectic feel to the album.

Now that the photos were sorted, it was time for the fun stuff!  I ADORE this new collection especially the mix of pink and purple and the floral in the “Abundant” paper is to die for!  I thought it best to stick with a small selection of papers, “Abundant”, “Dreamer”, “Wild and Free” and “Bo Ho Bits” and teamed these with a piece of bright green cardstock from my stash.  I was going for bright and fun just like my Miss 10!

I have used a set of pocket page plastic sheets as pockets for my photos and went about inserting these and adding my pattern papers to the back.  I created tabs for the photos to attach to the ring at the top out of rectangles cut from the “Bo Ho Bits” pattern paper.  I simply fussy cut them out, folded in half and then punched a hole in them.  I have also used quite a few of the elements from this cut apart sheet for my embellishments.  The number of each birthday came from my stash, it was good to finally get a use for those!

The bones of the project were coming together at this point so now was the time to go page by page adding lots of elements.  I started with the tag from the Sticker sheet that says “You Brighten my World” and added that to a scrap of pattern paper, next came a tag that was die cut and then I’ve added the word “lovely” from the chipboard accessories sheet.  For the next sheet, I’ve added a sticker tab to the right of my photo and a flair button.  I really wanted to use lots of bits from all of the parts of the collection, they go so well together and I just love the dimension they all bring.

This part of the creation process was so fun, I simply went page by page adding bits until I was happy.  Above you can see chipboard, fussy cut pieces of pattern paper and die cuts to create this cluster, finishing it off with some enamel shapes.  It was so nice to be able to just pick pieces and add them, there are just so many choices and with everything being so new and so well co-ordinated it really was hard not to add everything… I did use quite a bit though and I love that!

Here you can see a side view of the album.  I’ve added quite a few words and tabs down the side for interest and you can also see that I have added A LOT of sewing details to keep the album together.  I have also included a few shaker pockets with sequins which are really fun.  Sewing them really helps them stay together as they are handled so much more than pages in an album.  I think this is one of the reasons I love making them so much,  I seriously could make these all day every day!

I do hope you love what I have created with this new collection, it was so fun to make!  If you haven’t had a chance to see it all, be sure to pop over to the Cocoa Vanilla Facebook page, it really is such a stunning collection.

Until next time,

Hi Creative Friends,

Gwen, back today for another layout to share.  This week on the blog the DT are focusing on Hearts and Flowers!  You will all know this was NOT a challenge at all for me as I adore working with both!  I started with this cute selfie taken by Miss 10 of herself and the cat, there is nothing quite like finding gems like these on your phone, I so adore them!

The inspiration for this page began with the cut file from Paper Issues.  As my photo was a little grainy, I knew it would have to stay quite small in size so I thought I’d go for a large cut file element to fill in the remainder of the page.  I also knew at this point I wanted to use the bright pink, green and yellow tones in the Fresh Cut paper from the Make A Wish Collection as my inspiration.

I don’t actually end up using a lot of this paper, however, it really was my starting point for the page. There are so many times where I’m not sure to start and pretty products like these always get me inspired!

I started by backing the three flowers in my cut file with this paper and the leaves as well, with the Party Dots paper.  I also used these 2 papers as the mount for my photo.  I also wanted to pull out floral elements from the die cut ephemera as well as the vellum accents pack.  Both of these packs have so many pretty floral elements, I knew they would all be a perfect fit!!  I also now took the time to fussy cut out a few of the yellow and pink flowers from the Fresh Cut paper.

Now was the time for some fun!  I simply went about adding floral elements in between and over the top of the cut file piece.  I was going for a floral explosion here!  I also found this pretty little vellum piece in the vellum accents pack and thought it would be a very sweet title, I’ve just hand stitched it onto a circle of white cardstock and placed it in the center of the middle flower.

You can see here my photo mat and some of the die cut pieces.  The paper flower is part of the Hello Sunshine Collection – shop them here.

Now was the time to think about adding some hearts for the “heart” part of the challenge… I had certainly covered flowers at this point 🙂

I went with the Free Spirit Resin hearts and Life is Beautiful Wood Veneer hearts, I just love how all of the Cocoa Vanilla collections work so well together and they were a really nice finishing touch.   I have also added in a wood veneer butterfly from this same pack to pull together the die cut butterflies I have added.

I really loved the page at this point, but felt it was missing something… it was still very white on white and needed a little more contrast.  So I decided to add a little more stitching.  Well, a lot more stitching actually!  I had already added some for the circle title element, so it made sense to add some more around that floral piece.  Then I added more on the leaves and a few other floral elements in pink, green and yellow….  the 3 colours that started it all in the first place!

Lastly, I added a few sequins for some sparkle and the page was done!  This one did take a while with all the stitching and lots and lots of small elements, but I am super happy with how it turned out, I think it was worth it!

Thanks for popping by today

Until next time

By | 2017-09-02T14:14:29+00:00 September 4th, 2017|Colour Me Happy, Cut Files, Design Team, Endless Summer, Inspiration|

Hi Creative Friends,

Gwen here, back today for another share, this time I have a fun Summer themed page featuring me!   This shot was taken at a Fun Run my sister and I did last year, as part of our “try new things” year for my 40th birthday.  I had never done anything like this so it was on our list!! AND it was so fun!  Now, we didn’t run but walked the 10-kilometre track, stopping along the way for happy snaps and this was one of them!  I’ve used the Endless Summer collection for this for its Summery soft tones.

The idea for the page began with my photo and the die cut title from the Ephemera Pack.  I find a page always comes together quickly when you have something like this to start you off.  I then went about cutting out the floral die cut file from the Colour Me Happy collection.  I went quite large with these as I knew I wanted them to be a major part of my design and to layer my photo and elements over the top of them.  I’ve left then plain white to contrast my background.

I went with the Sweet Treats paper for my background, because, well, who doesn’t love a wood grain!  I have rotated the paper so the grain runs up and down rather than across as I knew my design would flow more in this direction.  Next, I went about matting my photo, I’ve used both sides of the Coastal Chill paper.  I love doing this for a double matt photo.  You know the patterns will work together well and you are only cutting into one sheet.  I’ve also used a section of the This & That paper as my third paper layer, lots of fun things to fussy cut out of this one and then you can use the outside edges as a photo mat.

I’ve then gone ahead and fussy cut out the pink doily and striped tab from the same paper and layered them into my paper stack.  I also took this opportunity to add some foam tape to my photo to make it stand out above the background layers.  Now was also the time to add a single pink flower from the Blooms pack.

I then went ahead and added the smaller elements.  I adore the little wood veneer pieces in this collection, cute clouds, hearts and even a flamingo!! I’ve also added a cloud from the puffy stickers sheet, super cute!! I then went in search of elements from the Ephemera Pack.  I went with this cute banner as well as the title.  It was a nice chance to add some stitching here as well.

Lastly, I added the Flair and Enamel Shapes and some Woodies, all the page was done!  I love how it turned out, so warm and Summery.  With Winter now behind us in Australia, I am so looking forward to seeing all the Spring/Summer filled pages and I hope mine has inspired you today.

Thanks for popping by today

Until next time

By | 2017-08-14T21:49:19+00:00 August 18th, 2017|Design Team, Endless Summer, Inspiration, Life Is Beautiful|

Hi Creative Friends,

Gwen with you on the blog today and this week our focus is on creating with multiple photos.  Generally, I prefer to scrap one photo per page so it was fun to mix things up a bit and include more than one.  I had these 2 cute pics of my kitty Ferris and thought they would be perfect.  I seriously think this cat sleeps all day, it’s quite the life don’t you think!

The design for this page started with the photos which I knew I wanted to print smaller than usual.  These are 3 inches x 3 inches.  I would definitely recommend working with smaller prints if you are used to only using one photo at a time.  I also knew I wanted to create a bold title, another reason for printing smaller than usual as I knew my title would fill up quite a bit of space on the page.  I have used my Silhouette to cut the title from a plain piece of card stock, then I went about mounting it with the Sunbleached paper, I just love the ombre on this one, I didn’t want a pattern in my background here, I wanted something very simple and this paper was perfect.

Next, it was time to get about hand stitching.  I punched small holes around the edge of the letters and then hand stitched using embroidery thread.  I like to leave a small white space between the edge of the letters and my stitching so that it looks more like an outline rather than sitting directly on the edge.

I then also mounted this piece of white cardstock onto the Sweet Treats paper – just so that a small strip was showing at the top and a slightly larger one down the bottom.  I also added stitching with my machine around the edge at this point.

Now was the time to place my photos and add my embellishment clusters.  I wanted the design to be somewhat symmetrical, so I placed one photo under the title on the left and the other above the title on the right.  I have mounted these using the striped side of the Coastal Chill paper and the lightest part of the Sunbleached paper.  Next, I added the cute floral pieces from the accessory stickers sheet.  I know it’s extravagant to use the 2 floral pieces from 2 separate sheets, but I had them there and I really wanted that part of the design to balance.

It was now time to finish off my title, I’ve done this with the Alphabet stickers.  I pulled out the green letters on the sheet to help balance out the small green details from the flower clusters.  There was already a lot of the warm peach tones, so I didn’t want to add to them, I wanted something to break them up a little.  With such a big title, I wanted to keep the other elements on the page quite simple so I have just added a few wood veneer elements, these ones are from the Life is Beautiful collection and some sticker hearts also from the Accessory Sticker sheet.

Lastly, I added some cute enamel elements from the Enamel Shapes pack and the layout was done.

Thanks for popping by today, I hope you have enjoyed seeing how this one came together and I’d love to see your pages using more than one photo; so be sure to share them in the Cocoa Vanilla Studio Community, we do really love seeing your creations!
