HAPPY LITTLE MOMENTS | MAKE A WISH | GWEN WRUCK

Hi Creative Friends,

Gwen, back today for another layout to share.  This week on the blog the DT are focusing on Hearts and Flowers!  You will all know this was NOT a challenge at all for me as I adore working with both!  I started with this cute selfie taken by Miss 10 of herself and the cat, there is nothing quite like finding gems like these on your phone, I so adore them!

The inspiration for this page began with the cut file from Paper Issues.  As my photo was a little grainy, I knew it would have to stay quite small in size so I thought I’d go for a large cut file element to fill in the remainder of the page.  I also knew at this point I wanted to use the bright pink, green and yellow tones in the Fresh Cut paper from the Make A Wish Collection as my inspiration.

I don’t actually end up using a lot of this paper, however, it really was my starting point for the page. There are so many times where I’m not sure to start and pretty products like these always get me inspired!

I started by backing the three flowers in my cut file with this paper and the leaves as well, with the Party Dots paper.  I also used these 2 papers as the mount for my photo.  I also wanted to pull out floral elements from the die cut ephemera as well as the vellum accents pack.  Both of these packs have so many pretty floral elements, I knew they would all be a perfect fit!!  I also now took the time to fussy cut out a few of the yellow and pink flowers from the Fresh Cut paper.

Now was the time for some fun!  I simply went about adding floral elements in between and over the top of the cut file piece.  I was going for a floral explosion here!  I also found this pretty little vellum piece in the vellum accents pack and thought it would be a very sweet title, I’ve just hand stitched it onto a circle of white cardstock and placed it in the center of the middle flower.

You can see here my photo mat and some of the die cut pieces.  The paper flower is part of the Hello Sunshine Collection – shop them here.

Now was the time to think about adding some hearts for the “heart” part of the challenge… I had certainly covered flowers at this point 🙂

I went with the Free Spirit Resin hearts and Life is Beautiful Wood Veneer hearts, I just love how all of the Cocoa Vanilla collections work so well together and they were a really nice finishing touch.   I have also added in a wood veneer butterfly from this same pack to pull together the die cut butterflies I have added.

I really loved the page at this point, but felt it was missing something… it was still very white on white and needed a little more contrast.  So I decided to add a little more stitching.  Well, a lot more stitching actually!  I had already added some for the circle title element, so it made sense to add some more around that floral piece.  Then I added more on the leaves and a few other floral elements in pink, green and yellow….  the 3 colours that started it all in the first place!

Lastly, I added a few sequins for some sparkle and the page was done!  This one did take a while with all the stitching and lots and lots of small elements, but I am super happy with how it turned out, I think it was worth it!

Thanks for popping by today

Until next time

SUMMER | ENDLESS SUMMER | GWEN WRUCK

By | 2017-09-02T14:14:29+00:00 September 4th, 2017|Colour Me Happy, Cut Files, Design Team, Endless Summer, Inspiration|

Hi Creative Friends,

Gwen here, back today for another share, this time I have a fun Summer themed page featuring me!   This shot was taken at a Fun Run my sister and I did last year, as part of our “try new things” year for my 40th birthday.  I had never done anything like this so it was on our list!! AND it was so fun!  Now, we didn’t run but walked the 10-kilometre track, stopping along the way for happy snaps and this was one of them!  I’ve used the Endless Summer collection for this for its Summery soft tones.

The idea for the page began with my photo and the die cut title from the Ephemera Pack.  I find a page always comes together quickly when you have something like this to start you off.  I then went about cutting out the floral die cut file from the Colour Me Happy collection.  I went quite large with these as I knew I wanted them to be a major part of my design and to layer my photo and elements over the top of them.  I’ve left then plain white to contrast my background.

I went with the Sweet Treats paper for my background, because, well, who doesn’t love a wood grain!  I have rotated the paper so the grain runs up and down rather than across as I knew my design would flow more in this direction.  Next, I went about matting my photo, I’ve used both sides of the Coastal Chill paper.  I love doing this for a double matt photo.  You know the patterns will work together well and you are only cutting into one sheet.  I’ve also used a section of the This & That paper as my third paper layer, lots of fun things to fussy cut out of this one and then you can use the outside edges as a photo mat.

I’ve then gone ahead and fussy cut out the pink doily and striped tab from the same paper and layered them into my paper stack.  I also took this opportunity to add some foam tape to my photo to make it stand out above the background layers.  Now was also the time to add a single pink flower from the Blooms pack.

I then went ahead and added the smaller elements.  I adore the little wood veneer pieces in this collection, cute clouds, hearts and even a flamingo!! I’ve also added a cloud from the puffy stickers sheet, super cute!! I then went in search of elements from the Ephemera Pack.  I went with this cute banner as well as the title.  It was a nice chance to add some stitching here as well.

Lastly, I added the Flair and Enamel Shapes and some Woodies, all the page was done!  I love how it turned out, so warm and Summery.  With Winter now behind us in Australia, I am so looking forward to seeing all the Spring/Summer filled pages and I hope mine has inspired you today.

Thanks for popping by today

Until next time

THE SLEEPY KITTY | ENDLESS SUMMER | GWEN WRUCK

By | 2017-08-14T21:49:19+00:00 August 18th, 2017|Design Team, Endless Summer, Inspiration, Life Is Beautiful|

Hi Creative Friends,

Gwen with you on the blog today and this week our focus is on creating with multiple photos.  Generally, I prefer to scrap one photo per page so it was fun to mix things up a bit and include more than one.  I had these 2 cute pics of my kitty Ferris and thought they would be perfect.  I seriously think this cat sleeps all day, it’s quite the life don’t you think!

The design for this page started with the photos which I knew I wanted to print smaller than usual.  These are 3 inches x 3 inches.  I would definitely recommend working with smaller prints if you are used to only using one photo at a time.  I also knew I wanted to create a bold title, another reason for printing smaller than usual as I knew my title would fill up quite a bit of space on the page.  I have used my Silhouette to cut the title from a plain piece of card stock, then I went about mounting it with the Sunbleached paper, I just love the ombre on this one, I didn’t want a pattern in my background here, I wanted something very simple and this paper was perfect.

Next, it was time to get about hand stitching.  I punched small holes around the edge of the letters and then hand stitched using embroidery thread.  I like to leave a small white space between the edge of the letters and my stitching so that it looks more like an outline rather than sitting directly on the edge.

I then also mounted this piece of white cardstock onto the Sweet Treats paper – just so that a small strip was showing at the top and a slightly larger one down the bottom.  I also added stitching with my machine around the edge at this point.

Now was the time to place my photos and add my embellishment clusters.  I wanted the design to be somewhat symmetrical, so I placed one photo under the title on the left and the other above the title on the right.  I have mounted these using the striped side of the Coastal Chill paper and the lightest part of the Sunbleached paper.  Next, I added the cute floral pieces from the accessory stickers sheet.  I know it’s extravagant to use the 2 floral pieces from 2 separate sheets, but I had them there and I really wanted that part of the design to balance.

It was now time to finish off my title, I’ve done this with the Alphabet stickers.  I pulled out the green letters on the sheet to help balance out the small green details from the flower clusters.  There was already a lot of the warm peach tones, so I didn’t want to add to them, I wanted something to break them up a little.  With such a big title, I wanted to keep the other elements on the page quite simple so I have just added a few wood veneer elements, these ones are from the Life is Beautiful collection and some sticker hearts also from the Accessory Sticker sheet.

Lastly, I added some cute enamel elements from the Enamel Shapes pack and the layout was done.

Thanks for popping by today, I hope you have enjoyed seeing how this one came together and I’d love to see your pages using more than one photo; so be sure to share them in the Cocoa Vanilla Studio Community, we do really love seeing your creations!

Until next time,

Gwen

BEAUTIFUL | WILD AT HEART | GWEN WRUCK

By | 2017-07-30T11:01:30+00:00 August 4th, 2017|Design Team, Inspiration, Wild at Heart|

Hi Creative Friends,

Gwen here today for another share, this time using the stunning and crazy popular Wild At Heart collection.  Perfect for a page featuring Miss 10.  She doesn’t always like having her picture taken, but from time to time she humours me and lets me take a stack, posing along the way.  This page celebrates the beautiful, unique person she is.

The idea for this page came from the “Beautiful” sentiment from the Chipboard Accent Sticker sheet.  It makes such a bold title, I knew I wanted to use it along with many of the other elements on this sheet.  For my design, I placed the title first, I often do this with larger elements, because if you leave them until later in the design process, frequently they don’t fit anywhere.  I find if I place my photo and the larger items first, that sets the design for the page and it comes together pretty quickly after that.

Once I had an idea of placement for my photo and the title, I then went about pulling out all of the other blue elements from the Chipboard sheet.  To mount my photo, I decided to use the Memento paper, I love the floral mix on this one and how it has a lovely mix of blue, purple and touches of pink.

Next, I began placing the chipboard elements down the left-hand side of the page.  At this point, I felt the layers needed a touch of pink, so pulled everything off and added a very light coverage of mist using the packaging technique.  It is very subtle, but it helps ground those elements and gave me a bit of a guide to build my embellishments onto.

Next, it was time to add some more layers.  I did this by punching strips of the Memento and Luscious paper with a border punch, layering them up and stitching them down.  Next, I went through the Accessories Sticker sheet and pulled out some co-ordinating elements.  I set about building a large cluster of elements that ran from the top of the page down to the photo at the bottom.

I also grabbed the sentiment “You’re some kind of wonderful” and “So Lovely” from the Fussy Cuts paper.  Stitching some down, and raising some up for interest.

I continued to add layers and bits and pieces until I was happy with the design adding a flair button, the cute little word sentiments from the Accessories Sticker sheet at the end, followed by some Sparkles for a finishing touch and the page was done.

Thanks for popping by today, I hope my page has inspired you to pull out your stash of Wild At Heart and your punches and get creative.

HAPPY YOU | HELLO LOVELY | GWEN WRUCK

By | 2017-07-06T10:13:58+00:00 July 18th, 2017|Colour Me Happy, Design Team, Free Spirit, Hello Lovely, Inspiration, Love Always|

Hi Creative friends,

Gwen here today to share another layout, this one featuring the beautiful Hello Lovely collection and a joyful picture of Miss 10 inside a Butterfly house on a recent family holiday.  I was drawn to this collection for its beautiful flower and butterfly icons, both the perfect fit for my photo.

I began this page at a crop with a friend and as I started working, I really wasn’t feeling like the page was working.  I don’t often scrap away from home and I think I had left my mojo behind!  So, instead of pushing paper around the page for hours, I thought, why not spend the time chatting and adding some hand stitching to the delicate background paper?

I began by cutting out the floral/star design on the B side of the Delightful paper.  I then poked holes around the outer edge and then all intersecting lines and stitched away.  Yep, it took a while, but I am so in love with how it turned out.

Next, it was time to mat my photo, I was able to squeeze a photo mat out of the remaining piece of this paper and for softness added a layer of vellum from my stash.  I have kept the photo mat layers to a minimum as I didn’t want to cover up or distract from all that hand stitching I had just spent hours doing!

To create my floral embellishment clusters, I’ve taken the Glimmer paper and fussy cut out the florals from the B side, I’ve chosen the smaller ones in the design and teamed them with elements from the Die cut Ephemera pack and Accessory Stickers sheet.

I’ve also combined a few things from other collections, like the Free Spirit Woodies and Love Always Wood Veneer, Bits and Pieces and Enamel Dots – sparkles.  I just love how everything works so well together, even if they are different collections.  This is a great way to use up bits and pieces.

I’ve worked around my photo creating a larger cluster on the left and a smaller one on the right, layering as I went being sure to pop up some elements on foam tape for dimension.

I love the mix of textures too, from the flat stickers to the wood elements to the metal butterflies, they all add interest to the design.

I’ve added my title at the bottom of the page and to coordinate with the wood elements in the clusters, I have used more wood veneer.  These are a mixture of collections with the word “Happy” coming from the Love Always collection and the “you” coming from the Wood Veneer Words from the Colour Me Happy collection.

I am really happy with how it turned out especially considering I didn’t think this one was working at the start! Proof, you can make things work if you go with the flow a little and stay flexible in your design process.

XOX | LOVE ALWAYS + WILD AT HEART | GWEN WRUCK

By | 2017-07-06T10:15:28+00:00 July 4th, 2017|Cut Files, Design Team, Hello Lovely, Inspiration, Wild at Heart|

Hi Creative Friends,

Gwen here today with a very special share.  This week we are focusing on journaling and whilst I’m not huge on journaling most of the time, I was super excited to create this layout documenting my return to Ballet; something dear to my heart.  I grew up doing Ballet right up until the age of 20, but then life got busy, I was at Uni, then met my hubby and had a family.  Turning 40 last year was a time of reflection and as part of that, I decided I wanted to get back into my pointe shoes… and I’m currently on that journey.

I wanted a very linear design for this page and to keep the journaling my focus decided on a very simple and clean design that ran up and down the centre of the page. I also knew I wanted a very soft colour palette to match with the soft tones in my photo so the Love Always collection was the perfect fit.  For my background, I’ve used the Twin Set paper – I just adore these pale pink and white stripes.

I also knew I wanted to go with the XO Colour Me Happy cut files as part of my title and cut them out quite large on my Silhouette.  I mounted these onto the Luscious paper from the Wild At Heart collection, I love this ombre in the perfect shade of pink.

Next, I found the sentiment “This Makes me So Happy” on the Lovely Things paper which I really wanted to use, but it was only 4 inches across and didn’t fit with the design I had in mind… I then had a bit of a brainwave to cut it up!  I trimmed along the grey underline of the text and then lined the four pieces up in a single row.  I then stitched these to my page.

Next, it was time to mount my photo, I wanted to balance out the colours I’d used in the top title so I also used the Luscious paper here.  I’ve also used the Class Act paper, another favourite in this collection of mine!

Now was the time for journalling.  I HATE my handwriting so it had to be typed.  I have a vintage typewriter which is quite slow to use, but beautiful, so I first drafted my journalling onto my computer.  This allowed me to edit and make sure there were no spelling errors etc and gave me an idea of how much space it would take up on my page.  I then simply copied this text out using the typewriter.  I’ve used the B side of the Lovely Things paper for this and then trimmed out the lines using a guillotine ready to add to my page.

Now was the time to place everything, starting with the XOX at the top, followed by the larger sentiment and then my journalling.  I then added my photo and saw there was a little space left at the bottom of the page; perfect for some smaller embellishments.  I decided on a little row of 3 of the vellum butterflies from the Vellum Accents pack, so soft and pretty.  I also wanted something subtle for the top centre of the page and I found this sweet heart shape on the Wild At Heart Chipboard Accent Sticker sheet which was a sweet little addition.  Underneath I placed the vellum butterfly, also from the Vellum Accents pack with some sparkles from the Bits and Pieces pack.  I thought these really helped balance out the design and fill some of the space without being too overwhelming.

To finish out the layout, I added tiny word sentiments from the Wild At Heart Accessory Stickers there are so many sweet words on this sheet, it is one of my most favourites!!  Lucky last I added some enamel dots sparkles in silver which co-ordinate with the sparkles in the top embellishment cluster.

This page came together really quickly, in part due to the focus being on the journalling, but also because every element is centred and flowing down the page.  I hope it inspires you to document something you’re passionate about and as always, would love to see you share you page in the Cocoa Vanilla Studio Community.

SWEET SPRING DAYS | ENDLESS SUMMER | GWEN WRUCK

By | 2017-06-15T19:13:31+00:00 June 18th, 2017|Design Team, Endless Summer, Inspiration|

Hello creative friends,

I’ve rested up after that fab long weekend at the Scrapbook & Craft Expo and I’m back for another layout share today as part of our SEASONS feature this week.

For this page, I wanted to document a little Spring weekend trip we recently took down the coast to go Glamping! For those of you who have not heard of the term, it is simply Glamourous Camping and I am certainly not a camper gal but was pleasantly surprised at how fun and comfortable these glamping tents were!!

This layout came together pretty quickly for me and surprisingly began with the photo and that cute little flag I have popped onto the top of the tent.  It is very rare that I would start a layout in this way, but it was the perfect fit and I just love how cute it looks there.  I then went about stitching around the photo to make it pop.

Next, I went about my usual process of creating the background, the Endless Summer collection seemed like the perfect fit and I was immediately drawn to the Blue Skies paper and those cute clouds.  For the lower section, I went with the Aloha paper which was the perfect neutral to ground my paper layers and photo mat.

I went with a pretty simple photo mat using bits and pieces from the, This & That paper.  These cut apart sheets are super versatile and a must in any collection.  I then went about constructing my title using a combination of the Alphabet stickers (which I have also stitched to my photo), Puffy Stickers and the die cut ephemera.  I added a subtitle with pieces from the, This & That paper, more die cut ephemera and the Accessory Stickers and a wood veneer.  I love mixing and matching the embellishments within a collection for added interest and the wonderful differences in texture.

Once I had sorted out my title and subtitle placement, I then went about adding a bunch of elements around my photo.  I began with the larger elements such as the “Hello Sunshine” circle cut from the, This & That paper and mounted on foam.  The Blooms for this collection are super pretty too; I went with this neutral one.

I then went on to add the florals from the Die Cut Ephemera pack and other circle elements including my favourite the Woodies.  A few people asked me about these at the craft show recently and yes, they are quite thick but to remove some of the dimension, I remove the foam mount that they come on and glue down with a liquid adhesive.  I love their dimension and the soft wooden colour.

Lastly, I pulled out the cloud elements from the Wood Veneer and Die Cut Ephemera packs and added them to the top part of the layout, I felt this really helped balance out the design as before these were placed, it was very bottom heavy.

And that was the page done.  I love how the clusters came together for this one and how I’ve used lots of bits and bobs from quite a few of the embellishment packs.  They fit together so well!  So, why not pull out your summer collections, snuggle up and scrap those fun summer pics, I hope I’ve inspired you today 🙂

Until next time,

Gwen
